It’s time for yet another dive into one of my weird projects. But don’t worry, daily FIVE JOKES will return next week!
A lot of this three-week adventure into jokes, sketches, and comedic projects from the past has been an attempt at depicting a chronological order of my writing/producing life, but for this installment, I’m backtracking to my time at the 2019 revival of All That to talk about a sketch I’m probably the most proud of being the inciting incident of. It’s called Cake Clash and its one of the funniest things I’ve ever worked on:
The reason this sketch is special to me is because it started as a sketch I’d written for an SNL packet the same year before getting the gig at All That. That is NOT to say that the exact sketch I wrote in the packet is what made it to screen. Far from it. But, on that topic… just looked at some of my old packets, and, come on… how was I never hired with sketch titles like these?!
Anyway, here’s the first page of my SNL packet version of a baking sketch, which ends up being about a contestant on a show like The Great British Bake Off who somehow keeps cooking meat:
I pitched the same premise in the All That room, and it gained some interest but as co-showrunner’s Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert pointed out, it needed a little more logic than “and somehow, that happens.” It’s a lesson I’ve kept in mind in everything since, because on the path of logic you’ll find character, story and more opportunities for jokes.
A bit more about Cake Clash below this paywall, but for more projects I’ve been a part of, click here! Or, check out more from the sketch's star, Chinguun Sergelen here:
