It’s time for yet another dive into one of my weird projects. But don’t worry, daily FIVE JOKES will return next week!
Diving back to my time as a digital sketch writer at Comedy Central, today I’m discussing an idea of mine that became a sketch about a restaurant for fighting, a.k.a. the The Rage Restaurant:
The original pitch was, ironically, much tamer — with me pitching something along the lines of “wouldn’t it be great if there were a restaurant people went to just to have tense conversations so you wouldn’t have to worry about making everyone else uncomfortable?”
Here’s how things started in my first draft:
An interesting premise. But it clearly needed to evolve. Our team, headed by fearless leader Mitch Lewis, was all about internet comedy which meant ideas needed to grab people’s attention quickly while scrolling. Also, if I recall correctly, our demo was boys and men who act like boys. There was often a need for my initial ideas to get ramped up and get to the meat of things lightning fast.
The idea of centering the sketch around rage instead of arguments likely didn’t come from me, but it allowed for a far more intense opening scene — in this case, a man smashing a plate on his table.
