Current Obsessions: ‘Good Night and Good Luck,’ ‘The #TacoAnthem,’ and ‘Stick’
Things move so fast these days. It’s nice to sit down and track what you’ve been focusing on.
This post is my faulty attempt at molding the sludge of content I consume into a presentable sculpture. Things move so fast these days. It’s nice to sit down and track what you’ve been focusing on.
And this week, I’ve obsessed over…
TV: Goodnight and Good Lick LIVE on CNN
Watching a live broadcast of this play, based on a movie, based on real events, via CNN, via HBO Max was a great reminder of just how weird our current state of media is. I can’t say this is the most gripping play in the world, but as a lover of nearly all things meta and media-related, my popcorn was popped and my eyes were glued to every second of this. Better than the play, to me, was the post-show discussion featuring a panel of journalists in a rare, deeply reflective exploration of where profession is headed for good or ill. Hey, maybe someday that’ll be a play.
MUSIC: The #TacoAnthem by #TacoMan
I don’t know why my algorithm delivered this to me but I can’t get this damn song out of my head (and I don’t necessarily mind it). Play on, #TacoMan… Play on…
TV: Stick (AppleTV+)
You know, Owen Wilson is that rare kind of actor who can pull off any line of dialogue. He could easily narrate the start of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and I’d be just as enthralled as I always am, if not more. Exposition just doesn’t feel like exposition when he’s doing it, and that’s the exact kind of charm you need in a show like Stick which, despite my keen disinterest in all sports has somehow managed to suck me in.
This confirmed my worst fear about STICK--that I will have to at least watch the pilot episode.
